Photo of the Week #4

Balboa Park Detail.

Here's a photo with a twist! I liked the textures in this image so much that I decided to unleash my budding painting skills. So I produced this oil painting based on the original photo. I need to re-work it a bit but here is my attempt.

One of the nice things about being a photographer is that I have plenty of source material to paint from.

Photo of the Week #3

Jogger in Balboa Park.

I decided to brave the weekend crowds and visit a local San Diego landmark: Balboa Park. It's getting along in years and looking a little ragged around the edges but it's still a great place to go and photograph some fantastic architecture.

I set this shot up of an old breezeway and waited patiently for a quiet moment. The foot traffic was heavy so I finally said "if you can't beat em'..." I don't usually play around with the colorized B&W trick but this one just seemed to call for it.

Photo of the Week #2

Death Valley sunset.

With the weather starting to cool down a little my thoughts are turning back to the deserts here in the Southwest. It's time to start planning my winter trip to DV!

Winter is a great time to photograph the low deserts. The daytime temperatures are usually mild and comfortable and the sun stays lower in to the horizon creating a nice warm light for most of the day.

This image was captured at sunset, just as the last light was leaving the valley. What looks like snow in the foreground is actually dried salts and minerals. There are an unlimited number of images like this all over the park.

If you haven't been to photograph Death Valley - make this the year!

Photo of the Week #1

Welcome to the new photo of the week feature. Every week we will post a new image along with some comments.

This image was captured from Highway 395 which runs along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. The actual location was just south of Bishop during the early fall. Although early winter storms can move through the Sierras this time of year, these magnificent clouds were the result of tropical moisture that was streaming up from the Gulf of Mexico.
